Summer Outside: Furnishing Perfect Alfresco Weddings and Events

There’s something about a great British summer that makes us all want to throw open the doors, move the furniture outside and make the most of every last drop of sunshine.
And summer 2026 has certainly given us plenty of reason to do just that. July brought prolonged warmth, exceptional sunshine and remarkably little rain across much of the UK, with some parts of southern England enjoying more than 160% of their average sunshine hours. The Met Office is now suggesting that 2026 could even become the UK’s warmest summer on record.
It has felt wonderfully Mediterranean.
Long lunches outside, late afternoon drinks, barefoot garden parties and dinners that carry on long after sunset have all become part of the summer mood. And for weddings and events, this means one thing: outdoor entertaining is firmly having its moment.

Bring the inside out
The best outdoor events don't feel like an afterthought. Instead, they create the same sense of comfort, character and considered styling that you would expect indoors.
Think generous sofas beneath a canopy, relaxed lounge chairs scattered across a lawn, rustic dining tables dressed simply with flowers and candlelight, and occasional tables positioned exactly where guests need them for a glass of something cold.
The trick is to create zones.

A comfortable lounge area encourages guests to settle in after dinner. A collection of bistro tables makes the perfect spot for drinks and conversation. Long rustic dining tables create a sense of occasion, while occasional chairs and benches can be dotted around the garden to provide informal seating.
Rather than filling every inch of space, allow the furniture to breathe. Outdoor furniture should feel relaxed and effortless, as though it has simply been there waiting for the party to begin.

Think Mediterranean
This year's weather has naturally influenced the way we want to entertain.
We're increasingly drawn to the relaxed elegance of Mediterranean spaces: natural timber, weathered finishes, cane and rattan, soft linens, earthy colours and furniture with a little age and character.
For a wedding, this might mean pairing a long reclaimed dining table with bright white director’s chairs or elegant cane-style dining chairs, or creating a relaxed seating area with beach-inspired wooden and white sofas, cane armchairs and bundles of neutral and terracotta cushions for an effortlessly laid-back, Ibiza-style feel.
Add a few parasols, terracotta pots, olive branches and simple seasonal flowers and suddenly the setting feels less like a traditional British garden and more like a sun-drenched finca in Mallorca (for those who know me, this is always my ultimate idyll!!)
The furniture doesn't need to match perfectly. In fact, we think it is better when it doesn't. A carefully considered mix of textures, materials and styles gives an event personality and creates that wonderfully collected, relaxed feeling.
And then there's the shade...

Shade is just as important as seating.
Large parasols are one of the simplest ways to create comfortable outdoor spaces while adding another beautiful layer to the styling. Positioned over dining tables, lounge areas or drinks stations, they provide welcome relief from the heat while helping to define different areas within the event.
They can also become part of the aesthetic.
White canvas, smart stripes or beautifully fringed parasols can add an instant sense of occasion, while more colourful styles can bring personality and a little Mediterranean charm.
And with temperatures increasingly reaching levels that would once have felt unusual for a British summer, planning for shade isn't simply about aesthetics, it's an important part of creating a comfortable event for guests.

Alfresco dining, done properly
There is very little that beats sitting down to dinner outside on a warm summer evening.
Long tables encourage conversation and create a wonderful communal atmosphere, particularly when dressed simply with linen, seasonal flowers, candles and beautiful tableware.
For larger events, consider breaking up the dining space rather than creating one enormous table. Several smaller tables can feel more intimate and allow you to create different looks within the same setting.
And don't forget the practical details: leave enough space between tables for guests and waiting staff to move comfortably, consider where the sun will be at different points throughout the meal, and position parasols so they provide shade when it matters most.

Let the evening evolve
One of the joys of outdoor weddings and events is watching the space change throughout the day.
A garden might begin as a relaxed ceremony setting, transform into a dining space for lunch, and then become a series of lounges and drinks areas as the evening progresses.
This is where versatile furniture really earns its place.
A collection of comfortable chairs can move from ceremony seating to drinks reception. Occasional tables can be repositioned around sofas. Benches can work beautifully along a dining table before finding a new home around the dance floor.
The result is an event that feels fluid rather than overly staged.

Make the most of summer
This summer has reminded us just how wonderful outdoor entertaining can be in the UK.
We're embracing longer lunches, beautiful gardens, relaxed seating, cold drinks, al fresco dinners and evenings spent under the stars. We're borrowing a little from the Mediterranean and bringing that effortless, sun-soaked feeling home.
So whether you're planning an intimate garden wedding, a country-house celebration, a summer party or a large-scale corporate event, think beyond simply putting chairs and tables outside.
Create somewhere people want to stay.
A shaded lounge for a long afternoon conversation. A beautiful table for dinner. A parasol-covered bar for an ice-cold drink. A comfortable chair positioned perfectly to watch the sunset.
Because the best summer events aren't really about the furniture at all.
They're about creating the setting for people to relax, celebrate and enjoy being together.
